Eames House

The Eames House was constructed in 1949, by design couple Ray and Charles Eames famous for their innovative furniture design. The aim of the space was to provide a home and also a studio for them to work in. Also known as Case Study House No. 8 the building is located in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood of Los Angeles. The couple lived and worked there up until their deaths. Today the house is carefully conserved to reflect the space as it was left, and it’s open to the public to visit. The house is filled with belongings, books, rugs, art, furniture designed by themselves or others. Following the Eames intent and philosophy with rigour carried through into smallest details, the design is both purposeful and beautiful. Something I loved about drawing this artwork was researching the space and noticing the small details and interesting collections. For instance, in a lecture discussing the conservation of the house, one team member puts it succinctly in describing,

“Objects wether a pebble or art piece are set in relation to others, and then that group in relation to other groups, and so on until it has a relation to the structure itself.”
